Bihar Governor Ram Nath Kovind will be NDA’s Presidential candidate

NEW DELHI: Bihar Governor Ram Nath Kovind will be NDA’s Presidential candidate, said BJP chief Amit Shah on Monday.


The decision was announced after the BJP Parliamentary Board meeting that took place in Delhi.

The BJP Parliamentary Board meeting was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, party chief Amit Shah, Union Ministers – Sushma Swaraj, Rajnath Singh, Venkaiah Naidu, Nitin Gadkari.

Kovind may file his nomination for president on June 23, a day before Prime Minister Narendra Modi leaves for the US.

Shah said political parties had been informed of the NDA’s choice. “I hope all will agree to the name,” he said at a press conference.

The BJP has lined up its Union ministers and senior leaders of its allies as proposers and seconders for filing the nomination papers of the presidential candidate.

BJP President Amit Shah had formed a panel comprising senior cabinet ministers Rajnath Singh, Arun Jaitley and M Venkaiah Naidu to consult with allies and opposition parties for the presidential candidate.

The Election Commission of India had started the process of filing the nomination for the fourteenth President of India on June 14. The nomination process will close in two weeks — June 28. But the nomination of the BJP’s presidential candidate is likely to be filed by June 23, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi is leaving for the US on June 24.

Voting will take place on July 17 from 10 am to 5 pm at the places of polling fixed under the rules. The result will be out on July 20.

The Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday announced Bihar Governor Ram Nath Kovind as the NDA’s Presidential candidate.

Kovind who has been a crusader for the rights of weaker sections of the society from his student days, may file his nomination for president on June 23, a day before Prime Minister Narendra Modi leaves for the US.

Ram Nath Kovind, was born on October 1, 1945 at Kanpur Dehat, Uttar Pradesh.

He got married to his wife Savita Kovind on 30th May, 1974 and have a son Prashant Kumar.

Kovind’s educational qualifications include a B.Com, L.L.B. degree from Kanpur University (Uttar Pradesh).

► Career

Ram Nath Kovind was enrolled as an Advocate in 1971 with the Bar Council of Delhi.

He was a Central Government Advocate in Delhi High Court from 1977 to 1979 and a Central Government Standing Counsel in the Supreme Court from 1980 to 1993.

He became Advocate-on-Record of the Supreme Court of India in 1978.

Had practiced in the Delhi High Court and Supreme Court for about 16 years till 1993.

► As a politician

Ram Nath Kovind was elected and became a Rajya Sabha MP in April 1994 from Uttar Pradesh and served for two consecutive terms for 12 years till March, 2006.

He served as a Member on the following important Parliamentary Committees:-

♦ Parliamentary Committee on Welfare of Scheduled Castes/Tribes.

♦ Parliamentary Committee on Home Affairs.

♦ Parliamentary Committee on Petroleum and Natural Gas.

♦ Parliamentary Committee on Social Justice and Empowerment.

♦ Parliamentary Committee on Law and Justice.

♦ Chairman of Rajya Sabha House Committee.

He has served as Member of Board of Management of Dr. BR Ambedkar University, Lucknow.

Member of Board of Governors of Indian Institute of Management, Kolkata.

Represented India in United Nations (New York) and addressed United Nations General Assembly in October, 2002

Thailand, Nepal, Pakistan, Singapore, Germany, Switzerland, France, United Kingdom and USA on Study Tour as Member of Parliament.
